Health Education Concentration |
Health education is a process of imparting knowledge needed to maintain a healthy system in order to achieve health literacy for our diverse population. To support that process, the health educator must reflect critically on one's own understanding and practice, pursue knowledge and skills that enhance professional practice, and serve as a conduit for achieving health literacy. The Health Education concentration prepares health educators who take their knowledge of the principles of health and health education, as well as their understanding of teaching, into their professional practice — while intentionally weaving together teaching methodology, concepts, and processes from a multitude of areas. The health educator utilizes professional skills to promote health, prevent disease, and assist in educating others to support healthy lifestyle choices so that citizens are more informed and better prepared to contribute to overall society. |
The program is designed primarily for certified teachers at the secondary level who are seeking the Health Education endorsement, certified school nurses, and other health educators employed in a variety of positions, who are seeking:
further enrichment, expertise, and confidence in their fields, new learning experiences to fuel their enthusiasm and passion for health education, unique opportunities to experiment with, refine, and reflect upon new methodologies and practices with which to engage their "clients" in learning about health, credentials that enable them to become a part of curriculum development in their areas of expertise.
| | The Health Education coursework is also ideal for teachers and other educators interested in:
enhancing their health education teaching and learning skills, strengthening their knowledge of health education content, deepening their understanding of health education as a vehicle for helping others make healthy choices in their lives, expanding their palette of valuable resources, preparing for leadership positions in the field of health education, realizing their professional vision of exemplary practice.

Classes typically meet on the same evening each week during the school year, once a week for eleven weeks; and during the summer two times a week for six weeks. NLU is beginning a Health Education cluster on the Lisle campus in Spring, 2006. Classes will meet during the school year on one evening per week, typically from 4:30 to 9:30, and two days per week for six weeks during the summer terms.
The Health Education concentration may also be completed through individual course offerings rather than through the cluster format. Please see the National College of Education Quarterly for the schedule of offerings and/or contact the Program Coordinator to discuss a sequence.
Information about projected cluster groups throughout the Chicagoland area may be obtained from the Enrollment Office (800-443-5522 x4430/x2743/x3371/x8053).
